Persuasive Essay The story revolves around the two feuding families of Verona; the Capulets and the Montagues, the young couple Romeo and Juliet falling in love with each other and the problems they face in doing so. Act three scene five, known as the Second Balcony Scene, is of great dramatic importance and contains various moods, ranging from the calm lyrics of the lovers to the anger and bitterness of old Capulet. This scene is pivotal to the play seeing the last time the lovers meet alive and Juliets brave defiance of her parents. The story is popular because it has a universal appeal. People at the time would be familiar with similar problems. Marriages between Catholics and Protestants cause problems. It has influenced literature for hundreds of years as authors have chosen similar themes. West Side Story is a modern Romeo and Juliet story set in the USA. Love story by Eric Segal is similar theme of parental disapproval. The scene starts just before dawn with Romeo preparing to leave Juliets bedroom and start his exile in Mantua. In the script this is performed at the window itself. In film version by Franco Zefferelli, I have seen the director start off with the couple in bed. Personally I would follow the script and start it off on the balcony. This way it is easier for the audience to see whats going on and it also makes the balcony a centre point, more special. It has been their wedding night arranged with great secrecy through the help of the nurse. There is a birdcall and Juliet tells Romeo: It was the nightingale, and not the lark. Romeo resists, saying that he must leave before morning comes or he will be put to death. However, he stays longer with her. Juliet shows tension as she realizes that Romeo must leave her, but begs him to stay; she cannot bear to part with him. It is appropriate that the time is dawn, which divides the day and the night. Shakespeare plays on the theme that Juliet has supernatural powers. Romeo describes her as transforming night into day. She now has the power to change a lark into a nightingale through the power of language. The tension is further reflected in the light and dark images that colour their speeches. Romeo knows he must immediately depart for: Nights candles are burnt out, and he sees light in the east. Juliet tries to explain it away as a meteor in the darkness. As Romeo finally goes down the balcony to his exile, Juliet, with dramatic irony, asks: O thinkst thou we shall meet again? Romeo bravely tries to comfort her. Looking down upon him from her balcony, Juliet says with chilling foreboding: O God! I have an ill-divining soul. Methinks I see thee, now thou art below. As one dead in the bottom of a tomb. Tragically when the lovers meet next, it will be in a tomb, and Romeo will be dead. All the characters without knowing it are showing echoes of the future. The next part of the scene is the conversation between Lady Capulet and Juliet. I think Juliet should be alone in the room staring out of the window after Romeo, weeping. When her mother enters she would quickly get up and try to wipe her tears. She tries not to talk about it and walks around trying to keep herself busy and to distract her mothers attention. The dialog starts calm and relaxed. When Lady Capulet enters she finds Juliet crying and immediately assumes that she is crying over the death of Tybalt, instead of Romeo leaving. Lady Capulet gets a bit suspicious of why she has been crying so long: ;some grief shows much of love, But much grief shows still some want of wit. She warns Juliet that if she cries too much she would be seen as over sensitive. When she realises how upset Juliet is she makes a plan. Lady Capulet appears insensitive to her daughters sadness. At this part of the scene Juliet says ironic lines that mean one thing to her mother and another thing to herself and the audience. Indeed I never shall be satisfied with Romeo, till I behold him dead- is my poor heart so for a kinsman vexed. Juliet has to be careful so that her mother is hearing what she wants her to hear. She doesnt want to reveal her secret. This kind of language keeps the play on edge. It shows she is not completely lying, almost tricking her mother. It also engages the sympathy of the audience who know the full story. There is a lot of movement on stage and vivid images spoken through the language of the characters. Shakespeare uses blank verse a lot to break the rhythm of the text. I noticed he breaks off the verse if there is anger or disagreement. This helps it stand out more. The title was taken from an ode by Horace EssayAfter hearing of how her father threatened to abandon her she decides to take another way of convincing him. She begs him to listen but he leaves. She softens her language to her father flattering him i.e. calling him good father rather than demanding his attention. Her father leaves so once again she turns to her mother for pity. Delay this marriage for a month, a week, Or if you do not, make the bridal bed In that dim monument where Tybalt lies. Lady Capulet also shows unexpected cruelty. She makes no attempt to sympathize with her daughter or to understand her feelings. Her wicked nature is seen in her plan to poison Romeo and in her preference to see Juliet married to her grave rather than to have to handle Juliets disobedience. I think Tybalt is a touchy subject with her. When ever he is mentioned she acts strangely and gets very angry or tries to change the subject. In the scene after Tybalt is murdered when the prince is deciding what to do with Romeo, she spoke out the most, insisting Romeo was killed. You get the impression he was more than a nephew to her, for it wasnt normal in those days for a women to speak out so loudly and boldly, especially on a subject like this. This time she just ignored Juliet and told her she had nothing to do with it. Juliets last hope of comfort lies with her Nurse. Both her parents had rejected her. The nurse is Juliets best and only friend. As we see through out the play Juliet always turned to the Nurse for advice, help and comfort. But this time she fails to give Juliet the advice and comfort she needs. She perhaps has never given her good advice but Juliet with distant parents turned to the nurse as her only female advisor. Now realising the full impact of her original advice the nurse is afraid and starts to backtrack so she doesnt lose her job and home. Juliet wants the Nurse to say that she will help Juliet not marry Paris and get her to Romeo. The nurse gives deceitful advice to the young bride, to forget Romeo and marry Paris. I think its best you married with County. O hes a lovely gentleman. Romeos a dishclout to him; an eagle madam, The nurse basically tells her to go through with the marriage to Paris as he is a good match and Romeo is as good as dead anyway. This is the point of the play where the great friendship between the Nurse and Juliet ends. The Nurse says that she means this from the bottom of her heart. Juliet realizes that she can no longer trust the Nurses advice and that she must think and act on her own. This must be quite frightening for a young girl of 14. Juliet is shocked at her nurses disloyalty and vows that she will not take her counsel again. She feels very much on her won. Juliet pretends to agree and she then tells the nurse that she is going to make confession at Friar Laurences cell. She uses this for time to think what to do. In her devotion to her husband, she is prepared to deceive her parents and nurse for the sake of their love. The last speech that Juliet makes I think is the most dramatic part of this scene. You see her cunning side. When she is saying this piece you can imagine it on stage. If I were directing it I would have the lights dimmed and have Juliet kneeling down and than rising to pace the stage. When she says: Ancient damnation! O most wicked fiend I would have her throwing something after the nurse out of anger. Because its obvious shes very upset. Then I would have her trembling on her knees for she is very afraid. The tension finally drops when she finishes off her little soliloquy with: If all else fail, myself have power to die. So in this scene there is a lot of emotion and drama. It explores various relationships between the characters and is a foreshadowing to the end of the play. This scene sees the end of a lot of relationships; Juliet and her mother, Juliet and the nurse and Juliet and her father. Juliets very much on her own. This way she becomes more mature and finally realises the results of her actions. She has been forced to grow up quickly, from a young spoilt flighty girl; she has matured into a young woman whose love for Romeo has given her a purpose. She is determined to be reunited with her husband, or die.

They also learn that there are no adults present on the island and that none of the adults survived the crash. As they approach a beach, they find an enormous conch shell. Piggy gives the conch a little toot and summons the rest of the boys on the island to the beach. The boys assemble and elect Ralph as the leader. Ralph then assigns the Choir, led by Jack, to be the hunters. Then Jack, Ralph, and Simon set out to explore the island. Near the end of their journey, they encounter a wild pig. Jack tries to kill it, but is unsuccessful. When the explorers get back, a meeting is held. The explorers explain that the island is deserted but there is enough food to keep them alive. Jack and the hunters promise to supply meat. Ralph makes a rule that whoever is in possession of the conch shell is allowed to speak. Ralph proposes the idea of a signal fire to alert passing ships of their presence. All the boys agree and everybody rushes to the hilltop to start a fire. The fire sparks the gathered wood into a blaze. One of the boys is reported missing but none of the boys will admit to the likelihood of an accident. Everyone is hard at work the next day, either building huts or hunting. Soon the younger boys loose interest and go off to play. A meeting is called and the boys come up with some new ideas and talk about problems. Meanwhile jack wanders off and enjoys the peace and quiet. Soon the boys get into a rhythm of everyday life. In the morning is the best time for activity because it is cool and quiet. Afternoons are associated with napping. Some of the littluns are suffering from diarrhea from eating too much fruit. While Ralph and Piggy sit on the beach they notice a ship on the horizon, and are horrified to see that the signal fire has gone out. The boys rush to the hilltop to try to get it going again but it is too late. Jack and the hunters who were in charge of the fire were nowhere to be found. Ralph scolds Jack about the fire and he apologizes though he does not really care. Another meeting is called at the familiar place and Ralph reprimands them about their irresponsibility. Then the subject of the so called "beast" comes up. Ralph and Piggy try to give an explanation but it has no effect. Eventually chaos spreads though the crowd and the run off led by Jack, and Ralph is thoroughly agitated. That night, an air battle is going on and a dead pilot, with a parachute, lands next to the signal fire where Sam and Eric have fallen asleep. They are awakened and are terrified by the shadows and the body. The twins scramble down to the beach where a group has assembled, and they tell the story with farfetched details. A team of explorers is sent to investigate. They discover new land and plan what they will do with it, but Ralph reminds them of their mission and they continue. As they approach the hilltop, Jack accuses Ralph of being chicken and starts up by himself. They are frightened by what they see and spread even more panic with their report. Jack decides to hold a meeting and announces the threat of the beast and take a vote to overthrow Ralph. Nobody else agrees and Jack runs off alone in embarrassment. The New SAT Math What’s Changing SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips Starting in March 2016, there will be a newly redesigned SAT. The new SAT only has two sections: Evidence-Based Reading and Writing and Math. While most people are focused on the changes to the Reading and Writing section, there have been a few changes to the SAT Math section that are important to know. What are these changes? How will your SAT study strategy need to change? I’ll delve into that and more in this guide. Math: The Major Changes in the 2016 New SAT Let's go through each of the important alterations to the math section of the test. Two Sections: One With Calculator, One With No Calculator On the old SAT, the whole math section allowed you to use a calculator. On the new SAT, the math section is divided into two portions: one which allows calculator and one which does not. The non-calculator portion will always be the third section of the test. The calculator portion will always be the fourth section of the test. Don't be afraid of the no-calculator section. The reason you’re not allowed a calculator is you should be able to solve these questions without one. Some of the skills required to answer these no calculator questions include: Simple math (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) Simplifying single equations or phrases (using the FOIL method) Solving a system of two equations Knowing square roots (or being able to find a square root by multiplying) Being familiar with powers (and how to reconfigure powers). These questions can get somewhat challenging. Here is a sample no calculator question (from an official practice SAT) that requires you to use your knowledge of powers: If $3x-y=12$, what is the value of ${8^x}/{2^y}$? A) $2^12$B) $4^4$C) $8^2$D) The value cannot be determined from the information given. Answer Explanation: One approach is to express $${8^x}/{2^y}$$ so that the numerator and denominator are expressed with the same base. Since 2 and 8 are both powers of 2, substituting $2^3$ for 8 in the numerator of ${8^x}/{2^y}$ gives $${(2^3)^x}/{2^y}$$ which can be rewritten $${2^(3x)}/{2^y}$$ Since the numerator and denominator of have a common base, this expression can be rewritten as $2^(3x−y)$. In the question, it states that $3x − y = 12$, so one can substitute 12 for the exponent, $3x − y$, giving that the $${8^x}/{2^y}= 2^12$$ The final answer is A. Here is a sample no calculator question that requires you to simplify: If $x3$, which of the following is equivalent to $1/{1/{x+2}+1/{x+3}}$? A) ${2x+5}/{x^2+5x+6}$ B) ${x^2+5x+6}/{2x+5}$ C) $2x+5$ D) $x^2+5x+6$ Answer Explanation: In order to find the answer, you need to rewrite the original phrase and to do that you need to multiply it by ${(x+2)(x+3)}/{(x+2)(x+3)}$. When you multiply through, you should get ${(x+2)(x+3)}/{(x+2)+(x+3)}$. Continue simplifying by multiplying $(x+2)(x+3)$ in the numerator and simplifying the denominator by completing the addition of $(x+2)+(x+3)$. You should then get: $${x^2+5x+6}/{2x+5}$$ That matches answer choice B, so that is the final answer! Less Emphasis on Geometry Geometry took up about 25-35% of questions on the old SAT, but it will now account for less than 10% of questions on the new SAT. The questions will remain relatively the same, but there will simply be less of them. Here is a sample Geometry question from a new SAT practice test: Answer Explanation: The volume of the grain silo can be found by adding the volumes of all the solids of which it is composed (a cylinder and two cones). The silo is made up of a cylinder (with height 10 feet and base radius 5 feet) and two cones (each with height 5 ft and base radius 5 ft). The formulas given at the beginning of the SAT Math section (Volume of a Cone $V={1}/{3}Ï€r^2h$ and Volume of a Cylinder $V=Ï€r^2h$) can be used to determine the total volume of the silo. Since the two cones have identical dimensions, the total volume, in cubic feet, of the silo is given by $$V_(silo)=Ï€(5)^2(10)+(2)({1}/{3})Ï€(5)^2(5)=({4}/{3})(250)Ï€$$ which is approximately equal to 1,047.2 cubic feet. The final answer is D. Also, somewhat ironically, although the number of Geometry questions is decreasing, the College Board decided to give you more Geometry formulas in the reference section, which is at the beginning of the SAT Math sections. The reference section lists some formulas and laws for you to use when answering questions. Here is the old reference section: Here is the new reference section: In addition to the formulas included in the old reference section, the College Board has included the volume formulas for a sphere, cone, and pyramid. Also, the College Board gives you an additional law of Geometry: "the number of radians of arc in a circle is 2Ï€." While algebra was always a part of the math section, it’s now being emphasized even more. These questions can be very tricky because they ask you to apply algebra in unique ways. Some of the algebra skills required to succeed on the SAT math section include: Solving linear equations Solving a system of equations Creating linear equations or system of equations to solve problems (used in the example below). Creating, analyzing, solving and graphing exponential, quadratic, and other non-linear equations. The following example algebra question is from a real new SAT practice question: Answer Explanation: To solve this problem, you should create two equations using two variables ($x$ and $y$) and the information you’re given. Let $x$ be the number of left-handed female students and let $y$ be the number of left-handed male students. Using the information given in the problem, the number of right-handed female students will be $5x$, and the number of right-handed male students will be $9y$. Since the total number of left-handed students is 18 and the total number of right-handed students is 122, the system of equations below must be true: $$x + y = 18$$ $$5x + 9y = 122$$ When you solve this system of equations, you get $x = 10$ and $y = 8$. Thus, 50 of the 122 right-handed students are female. Therefore, the probability that a right-handed student selected at random is female is ${50}/{122}$, which to the nearest thousandth is 0.410. The final answer is A. Increased Focus on Modeling The new SAT math section has a new type of question which asks you to think about what equations or models mean. You will be given a model or equation and be asked to explain what certain parts mean or represent. These questions are weird because they're asking you to do something you rarely do: they ask you to analyze the significance of the number or variable in context rather than solve the equation. Here is a sample modeling question from a new SAT practice test: Kathy is a repair technician for a phone company. Each week, she receives a batch of phones that need repairs. The number of phones that she has left to fix at the end of each day can be estimated with the equation $P=108-23d$, where $P$ is the number of phones left and $d$ is the number of days she has worked that week. What is the meaning of the value 108 in this equation? A) Kathy will complete the repairs within 108 days.B) Kathy starts each week with 108 phones to fix.C) Kathy repairs phones at a rate of 108 per hour.D) Kathy repairs phones at a rate of 108 per day. Answer Explanation: In the given equation, $108$ is the value of $P$ in $P = 108 − 23d$ when $d = 0$. When $d = 0$, Kathy has worked $0$ days that week. In other words, $108$ is the number of phones left before Kathy has started work for the week. Therefore, the meaning of $108$ in the given equation is that Kathy starts each week with $108$ phones to fix because she has worked $0$ days and has $108$ phones left to fix. The final answer is B. More Advanced Topics Addition of Trigonometry Trigonometry had never been asked on the SAT Math section†¦ until now! Trigonometry will now account for as many as 5% of math questions. You'll be tested on your knowledge of sine and cosine. Here is a sample trigonometry question from a real new SAT practice test: In triangle $ABC$, the measure of angle $∠  B$ is 90 °, $BC=16$, and $AC=20$. Triangle $DEF$ is similar to triangle $ABC$, where vertices $D$, $E$, and $F$ correspond to vertices $A$, $B$, and $C$, respectively, and each side of triangle $DEF$ is $1/3$ the length of the corresponding side of triangle $ABC$. What is the value of sin$F$? (This is a grid-in question, not multiple choice, so there are no answer choices listed with the question.) Answer Explanation: Triangle ABC is a right triangle with its right angle at B. Therefore, $\ov {AC}$ is the hypotenuse of right triangle ABC, and $\ov {AB}$ and $\ov {BC}$ are the legs of right triangle ABC. According to the Pythagorean theorem, $$AB =√{20^2-16^2}=√{400-256}=√{144}=12$$ Since triangle DEF is similar to triangle ABC, with vertex F corresponding to vertex C, the measure of $\angle ∠  {F}$ equals the measure of $\angle ∠  {C}$. Therefore, $sin F = sin C$. From the side lengths of triangle ABC, $$sinF ={\opposite \side}/{\hypotenuse}={AB}/{AC}={12}/{20}={3}/{5}$$ Therefore, $sinF ={3}/{5}$. The final answer is ${3}/{5}$ or 0.6. Addition of i Questions asking you to use $i$ have been added to the new SAT math section. On the exam, problems that use $i$ will always remind you that $i=√(-1)$. However, you should know that this also means $i^2=-1$. You should otherwise approach problems that use $i$ in the same way you'd approach any other math problem. Let's attempt this $i$ example problem below: $${8-i}/{3-2i}$$ If the expression above is written in the form $a+bi$, where $a$ and $b$ are real numbers, what is the value of $a$? (Note: $i=√{-1}$) A) $2$ B) $8/3$ C) $3$ D) $11/3$ Answer Explanation: To rewrite ${8-i}/{3-2i}$ in the standard form $a + bi$, you need to multiply the numerator and denominator of ${8-i}/{3-2i}$ by the conjugate, $3 + 2i$. This equals $$({8-i}/{3-2i})({3+2i}/{3+2i})={24+16i-3i+(-i)(2i)}/{(3^2)+(2i)^2}$$ Since $i^2=-1$, this last fraction can be reduced simplified to $$ {24+16i-3i+2}/{9-(-4)}={26+13i}/{13}$$ which simplifies further to $2 + i$. Therefore, when${8-i}/{3-2i}$ is rewritten in the standard form $a + bi$, the value of a is 2. The final answer is A. How Does Your Study Strategy for SAT Math Need to Change? Let's go through the key steps you need to take to prepare for this new version of the test. Practice Mental Math Since there is a non-calculator portion of the new SAT math section, you need to be prepared to do math without a calculator! Make sure you’re sharp on your basic math skills (adding (including adding fractions), subtracting, multiplying, dividing). Also, make sure you know some common square roots (and squared numbers). My advice for making sure you're ready for the non-calculator portion of the new SAT math section is to practice a lot. Make sure you take every free new SAT practice test available. Don’t use your calculator on the non-calculator section and see how you do! Practice makes perfect! However, to get really good at your mental math, you need to stick to the real testing conditions. Realistic practice makes perfect! Spend Most of Your Study Time on Algebra Since algebra counts for 50% or more of the new SAT math section, you need to make sure your algebra skills are at maximum strength! Take every free new SAT practice test available, and make sure to do a thorough review of your test. Get Familiar With Advanced Topics For trigonometry, don’t worry about spending too much time on it since it accounts for less than 5% of questions, but you should make sure you know the basic trigonometry formulas you’ll need to use and how to apply them. If you have the basic trigonometry formulas (sine and cosine) memorized and know how to apply them, then you should be able to answer most SAT math trigonometry questions. Since trigonometry only accounts for about 5% of the math section, only spend about 5% of your SAT math study time on it. For $\bi i$, also don't worry too much. There are usually only 1-3 $i$ questions per test. As I said before, the problems that use $i$ will always remind you that $i=√(-1)$. Just make sure you remember that if $i=√(-1)$ then $i^2=-1$. If you keep this in mind, you should be able to solve the $i$ questions on the SAT. The Bottom Line Though the changes to the new SAT math section might feel major, they're actually relatively subtle. There has been a slight shift in the material covered, which means there needs to be a shift in how much time you spend studying certain math topics. The questions asked are generally more straightforward than those on the previous SAT math. In this play we have a 26 year old woman called Rita whom is a mature woman, seeking an education, as she didn't take the opportunity to learn when she was an amateur student, because of the environment she lived in and the fact she didn't want to learn due to her popularity and her working class culture. In reflection, Rita has come to realise how the law expectations surrounding her and her working class culture held her back from her real potential. She wants to change now and break this cycle. Frank, the other main character, is a teacher at the university where she has applied to do her course. He is around his 50's and is Rita's tutor. He is a lazy man, bored and frustrated by his life he too does not feel like he belongs anywhere. Frank does not like his job very much, he does not have any respect for himself at all. The play is staged in one room and only 2 people are taking the major role in the play. This is quite unusual for a play this long. Throughout the play, there are only two characters: this is known as a two-hander. Other characters are only mentioned in the play, but in the film have been cast as parts. It worked well for the film, but I think it lost the closeness which plays such an important part in the theatre.
